CURRENT EVENTS (RECIENTES ACONTECIMIENTOS)

Dempsey (I affectionally called him “Pitbull”)

The death of any pet is always a tragedy, but even more so if it is due to a groomers incompetence and neglect.

A couple of weeks ago Dempsey went to Petsmart to be groomed. He came home burned and cut all over his neck, with some sores elsewhere on his body. A vet said it was from the equipment getting too hot. Dempsey was put on Benadryl, and antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory. For the past couple weeks he’s lived with bandages around his neck, and a cone.

When a complaint was lodge with Petsmart, they refused to acknowledge what happened and said they would have to send everything to corporate.

A few days later, Dempsey was barely breathing and was rushed to the vet who immediately began working on him. His body temperature dropped, his blood pressure plummeted, and his breathing was weak. He rapidly worsened, and the vet finally said she could tell there had been brain damage. At that point she said there was nothing more she could do.

BOOK OF THE WEEK (LIBRO DE LA SEMANA)

The Longevity Book

by Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz wrote The Body Book to help educate young women about how their bodies function, empowering them to make better-informed choices about their health and encouraging them to look beyond the latest health trends to understand their bodies at the cellular level. She interviewed doctors, scientists, nutritionists, and a host of other experts, and shared what she’d learned—and what she wished she’d known twenty years earlier. (Source: Harper Collins Publishers)

MOVIES OF THE WEEK (PELÍCULAS DE LA SEMANA)

I just finished binge watching this on Netflix and I think it is even better than Season 1.

The Crown Season 2

Critics Consensus: The Crown continues its reign with a self-assured sophomore season that indulges in high drama and sumptuous costumes. (Source: Rotten Tomatoes with a 93% rating)

MUSIC OF THE WEEK (MÚSICA DE LA SEMANA)

When I and others were watching The Beatles in their early days, who knew that Lenin was going to read a book by Marx and try to change the world.  If nothing else, it was the end of innocence.

ART OF THE WEEK (ARTE DE LA SEMANA)

Salvator Mundi

By Leonardo da Vinci

Salvator Mundi is a painting of Christ as Salvator Mundi (Latin for Savior of the World) by Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1500. The painting shows Jesus, in Renaissance dress, giving a benediction with his right hand raised and two fingers extended, while holding a transparent rock crystal orb in his left hand, signaling his role as savior of the world and master of the cosmos, and representing the ‘crystalline sphere’ of the heavens, as it was perceived during the Renaissance.. EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK

(PERSONA EXTRAORDINARIA DE LA SEMANA)

Leonardo da Vinci

Portrait by Francesco Meizi

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519), more commonly Leonardo da Vinci or simply Leonardo, was an Italian Renaissance polymath whose areas of interest included invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography. Sometimes credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter and tank.

Many historians and scholars regard Leonardo as the prime exemplar of the “Universal Genius” or “Renaissance Man”, an individual of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”, and he is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived.

Born out-of-wedlock to a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, in the region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Florentine painter Andrea del Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in the service of Ludovico il Moro in Milan. He later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice, and he spent his last years in France at the home awarded to him by Francis I of France.

Leonardo was, and is, renowned primarily as a painter. Among his works, the Mona Lisa is the most famous and most parodied portrait and The Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting of all time. Leonardo’s drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on items as varied as the euro coin, textbooks, and T-shirts.

      • That is really painful to hear about, I always worry a little when Stella gets dropped off at Petsmart for her exams, but they seem nice, but you always worry when you go a vet or pet place if you’re getting Dr. Doolittle or Dr. Kevorkian. She’s getting a stye removed from her eye in a few weeks, I’m starting to wonder if I should just try the dental floss at home method, but am going to ask a friend (who rescues dogs, and has been super helpful with aleviating Stella’s arthritis,) what her opinion is first.

  1. I can’t imagine how grief stricken you and Carol must be. Dempsey looks like a wonderful dog, and dogs are family members. Our Plato, a 6 year old poodle, is almost always by my side wherever I go. The thought of losing him is terrifying. My condolences to you both. It may be early to say this, but there are many dogs who desperately need homes, and adopting one may assuage your sorrow. I have puppy playdates in my yard on Tuesdays, and I will warn everybody not to take their dog to Pet Smart, and I personally will never go to that store again. sending love to you 2 beautiful people, Judy

    • Thank you very much. Dempsey was our friend’s dog, but I thought he was the coolest little dog. He was just wonderful, so I started calling his “Pitbull”, which was such a contradiction to his nature. After learning of what happened to Dempsey, I would suggest only taking a beloved pet to a vet’s office for grooming, boarding or anything. I think there is a different between a retail store and a vet’s office. But, that is just my opinion and no doubt many of the retail establishments love animals. This particular store doesn’t, in my view. Oh, and, “Muchas gracias Judy.

  2. Hola Guillermo,
Your Spanish is excellent! Are you really fluent, or did you need assistance. If you prefer that I make all my comments in Spanish, I will do so. It is chillier than usual, and my pet sitter is very sick with the flu. I’m taking her dog, Frodo, and my dog, Plato, to Dogs Day Delight, a wonderful pet day care and boarding center nearby. The dogs will love the change. Always love talking with you and hoping that we will meet again. If you ever come to Cape Coral or Fort Myers, you may stay with us, if we are home at the time, or we might at least meet for an afternoon or a meal. I enjoyed talking with you and Carol so much, and so did Michael. con carino, Judy

    • Hi Judy,

I can read, write and speak a little Spanish, but it is broken Spanish and a number of words come out Italian, rather than Spanish. I try to understand, than check my understand with a translator.

I’ll be arriving in Orlando May 1 for the American Powerlifting Federation Raw Nationals and flying home May 6, but I don’t believe the time will permit traveling anywhere else in Florida this trip.

But we expect to be in Florida again in November. It would be nice to get together with you folks.
