  EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK

(PERSONA EXTRAORDINARIA DE LA SEMANA)

After all these years, people are still falling for schemes of the nature used by Carlo Ponzi. The victims want to make money without a much effort.  Most fraud schemes depend upon the personal weaknesses of their victims.

Carlo Ponzi

Charles Ponzi, (born Carlo Pietro Giovanni Guglielmo Tebaldo Ponzi; March 3, 1882 – January 18, 1949), was an Italian swindler and con artist in the U.S. and Canada. His aliases include Charles Ponci, Carlo, and Charles P. Bianchi.

Born and raised in Italy, he became known in the early 1920s as a swindler in North America for his money-making scheme. He promised clients a 50% profit within 45 days, or 100% profit within 90 days, by buying discounted postal reply coupons in other countries and redeeming them at face value in the United States as a form of arbitrage.

In reality, Ponzi was paying earlier investors using the investments of later investors. While this type of fraudulent investment scheme was not originally invented by Ponzi, it became so identified with him that it now is referred to as a Ponzi scheme. His scheme ran for over a year before it collapsed, costing his “investors” $20 million. (Source: Wikipedia)

  1. Interesting bit about Ponzi. I never knew that. I only know I’d be the worst swindler, lol. I’d feel too bad :’)

The cake looks delicious! Great post as always, Bill 🙂

    • I feel you can tell these Ponzi like schemes when the emphasis is on selling distributorships rather than the actual product. Glad you liked Carol’s football cake for coach Jo 🙂 And thank you for the commenting on my post Samantha.

      • Oh there’s plenty of Ponzi like deals in the Netherlands, too. I always go by Murphy’s Law, though: if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I reckon this goes for Ponzi deals by default.

Did your friend like the cake?? She must have!
