12/23/19 – Two-Minute Version of It’s A Wonderful Life

CURRENT EVENTS

No doubt many of you have seen this marvelous movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, which came out in 1946.

For those of you that don’t have time to watch this film again or have never watched this film, a friend of mine made this less than two-minute version of the film that I think you will enjoy.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Even Santa reads.

MOVIE, PLAY OR TV SHOW OF THE WEEK

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

If you are a devoted Star Wars fan, you may like this film or if you are an action film junkie. As for the rest of us, I would avoid it. It was just action, and more action; much of the action totally unbelievable regardless of how much you suspend disbelief.

Critics Consensus (Source: Rotten Tomatoes)

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker suffers from a frustrating lack of imagination, but concludes this beloved saga with fan-focused devotion.

Here are some big kids waiting to visit Santa.

  EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK

Although I often name Santa Claus as the person of the week, I thought I would like to include some details about Santa this week.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, or simply Santa, is a legendary figure originating in Western Christian culture who is said to bring gifts to the homes of well-behaved children on the night of Christmas Eve (24 December) or during the early morning hours of Christmas Day (25 December).

The modern Santa Claus grew out of traditions surrounding the historical Saint Nicholas (a fourth-century Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra), the British figure of Father Christmas, and the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas (himself also based on Saint Nicholas). Some maintain Santa Claus also absorbed elements of the Germanic god Wodan, who was associated with the pagan midwinter event of Yule and led the Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession through the sky.

Santa Claus is generally depicted as a portly, jolly, white-bearded man—sometimes with spectacles—wearing a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs, white-fur-cuffed red trousers, red hat with white fur, and black leather belt and boots and carrying a bag full of gifts for children. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century due to the significant influence of the 1823 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” and of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. This image has been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, children’s books, films, and advertising.

Santa Claus is said to make lists of children throughout the world, categorizing them according to their behavior, and to deliver presents, including toys and candy, to all of the well-behaved children in the world, and coal to all the misbehaving children, on the night of Christmas Eve. He accomplishes this feat with the aid of his elves, who make the toys in his workshop at the North Pole, and his flying reindeer, who pull his sleigh. He is commonly portrayed as living at the North Pole, and laughing in a way that sounds like “ho ho ho”.

  1. That was great actilng Bill. Wow didn’t know you could act so good! Actually it was pretty funny. I love the Christmas song by Dean Martin and the one withFrank Sinatra. They are the best. Best voices too. I have only seen 1 or 2 of the Star Wars movies. Don’t care to see the new one. It’s playing here now. Merry Christmas!

    • Thank you Darlene, that short version of It’s A Wonderful Life is my favorite. Hard to beat Dean Martine and Frank Sinatra. You made a wise decision not seeing the latest Star Wars movie. I think I was too kind in my assessment of it–I thought it was terrible.
