I’m not sure everyone is aware of the original purpose of today’s USA holiday, so here is a little background.

Washington’s Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. It can occur on the 15th through the 21st of February inclusive.

Colloquially, the day is also now widely known as Presidents’ Day and is often an occasion to honor all persons who have served as president, not just George Washington.

I was a bit disappointed in this movie, perhaps; because my expectations were too high having seen Gone Girl and being a fan of Emily Blunt.

Soon, she becomes entangled in a mystery involving not only the couple, but her former husband (Justin Theroux) and his new family. Sense and Sensibility

I watched this 1995 film again and I still enjoy it every time I watch it.

In this costume drama, based on the novel by Jane Austen, Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters are left with almost nothing after Mr. Dashwood’s death. They move into a cottage and sensible eldest daughter Elinor attempts to keep things running smoothly, in spite of her free-spirited sister’s efforts to the contrary. (Source: Rotten Tomatoes)

Don Juan DeMarco

A psychiatrist treats a most unusual patient, only to find that the doctor is the one who gains the most from their sessions in this philosophical romantic comedy.

A young man in a mask and cape (played by Johnny Depp) is standing atop a billboard, threatening to jump. When the potential suicide is finally talked down, he’s brought to a psychiatric facility where after one doctor washes his hands of the case, he’s placed under the supervision of Dr. Jack Mickler (Marlon Brando), an aging psychiatrist soon to retire.

The patient informs Mickler that he is actually the great lover Don Juan, who has seduced over 1,500 women, but has fallen into a deep depression after being unable to win the hand of the woman of his dreams.

Mickler has ten days to work with “Don Juan,” after which he will either be released on medication or committed to a long-term stay in a mental hospital. As Mickler talks with the young man, who speaks rapturously of the art of love, the doctor finds that his philosophies are helping to kick-start his failing relationship with his wife (Faye Dunaway), and he slowly becomes convinced that his patient might really be Don Juan after all. If you know me, I like books that say coffee is good for you. This book doesn’t say coffee is good for you, it just says there is little evidence that is it harmful.

As for diet soda making you fat, the research is inconclusive. Here is another one, green tea promotes weight loss. The research shows that is half-true. Or how about eggs being bad for your heart. The research shows they are not.

The book goes on and on telling you what the research shows about various diet claims. I found this book very interesting

Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton (January 4, 1643 – March 31, 1727) was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, alchemist, inventor, and natural philosopher, who is generally regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential scientists in history.

His law of universal gravitation and three laws of motion laid the groundwork for classical mechanics, which held sway in the physical sciences until the advent of quantum mechanics around the beginning of the twentieth century.

He was the first to show that the motions of bodies on Earth and celestial bodies are governed by the same set of natural laws.

Among other scientific work, Newton realized that white light is composed of a spectrum of colors and further argued that light consists of particles.

Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz share the credit for playing major roles in the development of calculus in the Western world. This area of mathematics has since proved of enormous value for the advancement of science and technology. (Source: New World Encyclopedia)

For instance, Nougé remarked, “it happens that sometimes a portrait tries to resemble its model.” Magritte replied, “It would be a good thing if the model tried to resemble its portrait.”

Cindy

Cindy is retiring at the end of this month and this is how I described her and her efforts over more than three decades.

You ever see a person; one that is standing so tall and so straight, you just can’t help but notice.

However, what you don’t see is what is supporting that person. You don’t see the backbone, which enables that person to stand so tall and so straight.

There have been a number of people over the years, who I could describe as the “Face of QA”, such as Mike, MaryAnn and Andrea.

I would describe Cindy, as the backbone of QA. Cindy and those like her, are the reason QA has stood tall and straight over the years.

As a Michigan citizen, covered by BCBS like half the people in this state, and as a former member of BCBSM, and as part of the QA family, I thank Cindy for her Distinguish Service to the People of Michigan, BCBSM and QA

La La Land

La La Land is a 2016 American romantic musical comedy-drama film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as a musician and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles. The film’s title refers both to the city of Los Angeles and to the idiom for being out of touch with reality (Source: Wikipedia)

I enjoyed the film from an entertainment perspective, but I’m not sure it will hold up as well as the other musical comedy that I saw last week.

A Hard Days Night

A Hard Day’s Night is a 1964 British musical comedy film directed by Richard Lester and starring the Beatles—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr—during the height of Beatlemania. The film portrays several days in the lives of the group.

The film was a financial and critical success. Time magazine rated it as one of the all-time great 100 films. British critic Leslie Halliwell described it as a “comic fantasia with music; an enormous commercial success with the director trying every cinematic gag in the book” and awarded it a full four stars.

The film is credited as being one of the most influential musical films of all time, inspiring many spy films, the Monkees’ television show and pop music videos.

Like Clarence in “It’s A Wonderful Life,” she has to accomplish a task to earn her wings. Only what the task actually is, is a mystery. There are so many things to fix. The problem is complicated by the fact that the only person who can hear or see Mom is her daughter who has been ordered by the court to spend Dad’s birthday with him as part of her Anger Management Program. One by one the family’s secrets are peeled away revealing a shocking truth that surprises even our ghost. (Source: Program)

These are a couple of S.E. Michigan plays, which I have seen, that are still running.

There are a number of other plays going on in S.E. Michigan and if you live elsewhere, it is likely that there is a play within driving distance.

If you haven’t seen live theater you should experience it.

I met Chacon back in 1981 and I thought he was one of the most extraordinary people I have come across, an artist and a philosopher. He died a number of years ago, but I still remember him.

I thought this is worth repeating, since there is still time for those of you in S.E. Michigan to see this play. And if you live elsewhere, I still urge you to see a live play.

I think you are missing out on an experience, if you don’t see live theater every so often.

Regarding this particular play, I thought it had just the right touch of comedy and sentiment, and the two sisters in the play were absolutely charming. If you do happen to live in southeastern Michigan, I hope you catch this play.

I saw a play yesterday afternoon that confirmed my opinion that you are really missing out on an experience, if you don’t see live theater every so often. Christmas Lights

Many of us are starting to take down our Christmas decorations. Christmas lights is one of the key ingredients to making this time of the year so festive.

I consider them a form of art, that each of us can be proud of since even the most modest Christmas lighting brings a measure of joy to all viewers.

On New Year’s Eve, we went to the Detroit Zoo’s Wild Lights and it was an amazing lighting display. I urge you next year to attend any similar event that happens to be near you.

Ed was a good friend of mine, I wish I had been a better friend to him.

I got to spend a lot of time with Bryant, who was one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. For a number of years he and I and sometimes one or two others got together for lunch each month. I miss those lunches, as Bryant is no longer physically with us.
