EpiPen

Mylan CEO’s Pay Rose Over 600 Percent as EpiPen Price Rose 400 Percent per NBC News.

In 2007 the company bought the rights to EpiPen, a device used to provide emergency epinephrine to stop a potentially fatal allergic reaction and began raising its price.

After Mylan acquired EpiPen, the company also amped up its lobbying efforts. In 2008, its reported spending on lobbying went from $270,000 to $1.2 million, according to opensecrets.org.

Legislation that enhanced its bottom line followed, with the FDA changing its recommendations in 2010 that two EpiPens be sold in a package instead of one and that they be prescribed for at-risk patients, not just those with confirmed allergies. And in 2013 the government passed a law to give block grants to states that required they be stocked in public schools. (Source:  NBC News)

Mikhail Gorbachev (1931 – ) was the first democratically elected President in 1990.

Mikhail Gorbachev played a key role in dismantling the Communist grip on power in both the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. His aspirations for democracy and reform opened up the way for the end of the Cold War and the bringing down of the Berlin Wall.

Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in October 1990 and was removed from Presidential office in 1991, during a failed coup attempt.

Gorbachev was born in March 1931 in Stavropol, the North Caucuses to a poor peasant family. At the age of 11, the district was occupied by the Germans for three years.

Charles Darwin

Wk 35 Charles_Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin (12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his contributions to the science of evolution.

He established that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors.Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of species.

By the 1870s, the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted evolution as a fact. However, many favoured competing explanations and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution.

In modified form, Darwin’s scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life. (Source: Wikipedia)

Speaking of  Yahoo

Verizon (VZ) buying Yahoo, the Internet company for a fraction of what it once was worth. Yet, CEO Marissa Mayer did very well for herself during her run.

Wk 32 Marissa Mayer

The chief of the fallen Internet giant was paid $139.6 million over her four years of service at the Internet company. That doesn’t even include the estimated golden parachute payment of $54.9 million she would get if she steps down, something she says she doesn’t plan to do. Mayer’s total haul at the company was even higher – $162 million – when factoring in how much the stock options she was given are worth now, according to compensation firm Equilar. Equilar says her total windfall, including a current value of her severance if she leaves, is $218.9 million.

Seeing the size of Mayer’s payout could be painful for investors who saw the company’s revenue stagnate during her tenure. Yahoo went from making a profit of nearly $4 billion a year to losing $4.5 billion and paying billions for small companies that haven’t paid off or were largely written off.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

By Robert Louis Stevenson

Illustrated by Robert Smith

The book above is a graphic novel.  It reminds me of the Classics Illustrated comics I read as a child, only a bit longer and a little better reflection of the real book.

If you don’t have time to read the original or if you want to introduce literature to a child, I think this book would be excellent.  I really enjoyed it and it was a very quick and easy to read book–my favorite kind of book

MOVIE OF THE WEEK

 Bulworth

Given the unusual nature of Presidential Politics this year, I thought of this 1998 film.

Wk 31 Bullworth

Jay Bulworth (Warren Beatty), a financially ruined senator, is now disillusioned with politics.

The forlorn statesman orders a contract killing — the target himself — so his family will be able to collect a fortune from his insurance policy.

Facing imminent death, a devil-may-care Bulworth speaks his mind in public, forsaking platitudes for honest but controversial observations.

But when he falls in love with a hip young woman (Halle Berry), Bulworth urgently rethinks his impending murder.

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865.

Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis.

In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK

 Outlander

I’ve watched two seasons of this Starz TV series and most of it has been good to very good, now that they have left their sadism behind.  For a while, I could not stand to watch some of it and had to fast forwarded through the sadistic crap, but the show got back on track was excellent.

Outlander

Outlander is a British-American television drama series based on the historical time travel Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon.

The show premiered on August 9, 2014. It stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married World War II nurse in 1945 who finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743, where she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings.

The second season, consisting of 13 episodes and based on Dragonfly in Amber, premiered on April 9, 2016.

On June 1, 2016, Starz renewed the series for a third and fourth season, which will adapt the third and fourth Outlander novels, Voyager and Drums of Autumn.

EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE

Marquis de Lafayette

 Arrival of Lafayette

Marquis de Lafayette (6 September 1757 – 20 May 1834), in the U.S. often known simply as Lafayette, was a French military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. A close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette was also key figure in the French Revolution of 1789.

He became convinced that the American cause in its revolutionary war was noble, and travelled to the New World seeking glory in it. There, he was made a major-general, though initially the 19-year-old was not given troops to command.

Wounded during the Battle of Brandywine, he still managed to organize an orderly retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war, he returned home to lobby for an increase in French support. He again sailed to America in 1780, and was given senior positions in the Continental Army. In 1781, troops in Virginia under his command blocked forces led by Cornwallis until other American and French forces could position themselves for the decisive Siege of Yorktown.

Lafayette died on 20 May 1834, and is buried in Picpus Cemetery in Paris, under soil from Bunker Hill. (More information is available on Wikipedia about this extraordinary individual)

How Proust Can Change Your Life

By Alain de Botton

This isn’t a new book, it was written in 1997, but I’ve read and reviewed it a number of times and have found it helpful and interesting.

Helpful by reminding us if we think and act like we are going to live forever, a lot of things important to us will be missed.

It has some interesting ideas such as characters we see in paintings (I will add to that movies and TV), we should imagine people we know in those roles.

There is also insight into human nature, such as when people part, it is the one not in love that makes the tender speeches.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Here I am by the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but I must admit that it looks a bit different from I had envisioned and as seen in history books.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is known worldwide for its unintended tilt.

The tower’s tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure’s weight. The tilt increased in the decades before the structure was completed, and gradually increased until the structure was stabilized (and the tilt partly corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. (Source: Wikipedia)
