Be Careful What You Postpone

BOOK OF THE WEEK

I found this very short and readable book an excellent reminder that we tend to waste much of our lives. Look at how you spend you day ant think about how little of your time is spent bettering your self and society.

On The Shortness of Life

By Lucius Seneca

Adapted for Contemporary Readers  by James Harris

This book is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to his father-in-law Paulinus.

★ Seneca brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that [people] waste much of it in meaningless pursuits.

★ According to the essay, nature gives [people] enough time to do what is really important and the individual must use time wisely.

EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK

Oscar Wilde (16 Oct 1854 – 30 Nov 1900)

Oscar Wilde was an Irish poet and playwright and became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s.

Wilde’s parents were Anglo-Irish intellectuals in Dublin. In his youth Wilde learned to speak fluent French and German. He demonstrated himself to be an exceptional classicist, first at Trinity College Dublin, then at Magdalen College, Oxford. After university, Wilde moved to London into fashionable cultural and social circles.

Known for his biting wit, flamboyant dress and glittering conversational skill, Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day. At the turn of the 1890s he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty into what would be his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890).

Wilde produced four society comedies in the early 1890s, which made him one of the most successful playwrights of late-Victorian London. (Adapted from Wikipedia)

  1. My friend, I have giggled a lot! “Onya Marx”…”We’re speaking English”. It’s always a joy to read your posts when I’m able, Bill. They’re filled with great nuggets! Last week on a whim, I walked a historical street in my city that has been revitalized with shops~coffee, shopping, and some businesses remain as they were years ago. My sons told me of a restaurant they love to visit when the come home (what a shame I haven’t been there). The name? Cafe Cusco! I stopped at an Amsterdam styled cafe. The owner also owns Cafe Cusco (I took pictures of the outside building). He spent two years living in Peru, two in Belgium. What a wonderful coincidence that I would have Cusco on my mind, in my photos, and then I enjoyed your video of your travels! Yes, as the great philosopher would share, how much life or time do we waste? I want to get better! I have things to see and do, Bill! Many blessings, dear friend!
