07/25/16 – Taking Some Positions

CURRENT EVENTS

Presidential Endorsement

I’ve been told readership of this blog might increase, if I would start taking positions on topics that are of interest to people.  People are interested in endorsements for who should be President of the United States.

So, I am endorsing Trump.

Probably not the Trump you had in mind nor for the particular Presidential Election that you had in mind.

Divided Nation

If you listen to and watch the media, you might think the USA is a divided nation.  Instead, just look around you and you will see acts like the ones below, going on every day, showing that we do care for one another.  If you don’t see this occurring, perhaps you should consider breaking out of your isolation.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde

By Robert Louis Stevenson

Illustrated by Robert Smith

The book above is a graphic novel.  It reminds me of the Classics Illustrated comics I read as a child, only a bit longer and a little better reflection of the real book.

If you don’t have time to read the original or if you want to introduce literature to a child, I think this book would be excellent.  I really enjoyed it and it was a very quick and easy to read book–my favorite kind of book

MOVIE OF THE WEEK

 Bulworth

Given the unusual nature of Presidential Politics this year, I thought of this 1998 film.

Wk 31 Bullworth

Jay Bulworth (Warren Beatty), a financially ruined senator, is now disillusioned with politics.

The forlorn statesman orders a contract killing — the target himself — so his family will be able to collect a fortune from his insurance policy.

Facing imminent death, a devil-may-care Bulworth speaks his mind in public, forsaking platitudes for honest but controversial observations.

But when he falls in love with a hip young woman (Halle Berry), Bulworth urgently rethinks his impending murder.

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865.

Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis.

In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

I’ve watched two seasons of this Starz TV series and most of it has been good to very good, now that they have left their sadism behind.  For a while, I could not stand to watch some of it and had to fast forwarded through the sadistic crap, but the show got back on track was excellent.

Outlander

Outlander is a British-American television drama series based on the historical time travel Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon.

The show premiered on August 9, 2014. It stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married World War II nurse in 1945 who finds herself transported back to Scotland in 1743, where she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings.

The second season, consisting of 13 episodes and based on Dragonfly in Amber, premiered on April 9, 2016.

On June 1, 2016, Starz renewed the series for a third and fourth season, which will adapt the third and fourth Outlander novels, Voyager and Drums of Autumn.

Marquis de Lafayette

 Arrival of Lafayette

Marquis de Lafayette (6 September 1757 – 20 May 1834), in the U.S. often known simply as Lafayette, was a French military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. A close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette was also key figure in the French Revolution of 1789.

He became convinced that the American cause in its revolutionary war was noble, and travelled to the New World seeking glory in it. There, he was made a major-general, though initially the 19-year-old was not given troops to command.

Wounded during the Battle of Brandywine, he still managed to organize an orderly retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war, he returned home to lobby for an increase in French support. He again sailed to America in 1780, and was given senior positions in the Continental Army. In 1781, troops in Virginia under his command blocked forces led by Cornwallis until other American and French forces could position themselves for the decisive Siege of Yorktown.

Lafayette died on 20 May 1834, and is buried in Picpus Cemetery in Paris, under soil from Bunker Hill. (More information is available on Wikipedia about this extraordinary individual)

How Proust Can Change Your Life

By Alain de Botton

This isn’t a new book, it was written in 1997, but I’ve read and reviewed it a number of times and have found it helpful and interesting.

Helpful by reminding us if we think and act like we are going to live forever, a lot of things important to us will be missed.

It has some interesting ideas such as characters we see in paintings (I will add to that movies and TV), we should imagine people we know in those roles.

There is also insight into human nature, such as when people part, it is the one not in love that makes the tender speeches.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is known worldwide for its unintended tilt.

The tower’s tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure’s weight. Pantheon in Rome

Here is a photo I took of my wife, Carol, standing in front of the Pantheon, on one of our trips to Rome.

Carol in front of Panthon

The Pantheon, is on the site of an earlier building commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27 BC – 14 AD). The present building was completed by the emperor Hadrian and probably dedicated about 126 AD.

Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon’s dome is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome.

It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings, in large part because it has been in continuous use throughout its history. The square in front of the Pantheon is called Piazza della Rotonda. The Pantheon, in 2013 it was visited by over 6 million people. (Source: Wikipedia)

 Worf

Although Worf was raised by humans, when his parents were killed during a surprise attack by Romulans, he considered himself a Klingon at heart and studied the ways of his people. As an adult, his mannerisms and personality, as well as his innate sense of honor, became more Klingon than human.

In 2357, Worf entered Starfleet Academy. He graduated in 2361 and was commissioned with the rank of Ensign, becoming the first Klingon officer in Starfleet.  Through many brave acts and his deep sense of honor and loyalty, he rose through the ranks in Starfleet, eventually becoming Lieutenant Commander.  Later the Federation made him ambassador to the Klingon home world, Qo’noS.

06/13/16 – Ireland Journey Continues

CURRENT EVENTS

Ireland

The visit to Ireland crossed over into this week.  We went by train from Dublin to Cork and while in Cork took a day trip to Blarney Castle, home of the famous Blarney Stone.  No we did not kiss the Blarney Stone.  This castle was the real deal, it was hard to tell the Lord of the Castle’s bedroom from the castle’s dungeon.

From Cork, we went by bus to Kilkenny–do not do that.  It took us three buses to reach Kilkenny, but I liked Kilkenny so much I thought it worth enduring all the bus changes. Here is Carol and I at the Kilkenny Castle

Carol y Yo at Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny is home of Smithwick’s Brewery and it was the best brewery or distillery tour I was on while in Ireland.  When I got home, I bought a six-pack of Smithwick’s.

From Kilkenny, we went back to Dublin by bus–a very nice ride.  Here Carol and I are doing a whiskey taste test at the Jameson Distillery.  I’m not a liquor drinker, but the tour was a lot of fun.

SELF-HELP BOOKS

Candide

By Voltaire

I just finished reading this book and I regret to say that I was reading it for the first time. I cannot believe I waited this long in my life to read this book.  Although written in 1759, I found the book to be fresh and so easy to read.  This particular book is available at Barnes & Nobles for $7.95

Wk 25 Candide

One of the finest satires ever written, Voltaire’s Candide savagely skewers this very “optimistic” approach to life as a shamefully inadequate response to human suffering. The swift and lively tale follows the absurdly melodramatic adventures of the youthful Candide, who is forced into the army, flogged, shipwrecked, betrayed, robbed, separated from his beloved Cunégonde, and tortured by the Inquisition. As Candide experiences and witnesses calamity upon calamity, he begins to discover that—contrary to the teachings of his tutor, Dr. Pangloss—all is perhaps not always for the best. After many trials, travails, and incredible reversals of fortune, Candide and his friends finally retire together to a small farm, where they discover that the secret of happiness is simply “to cultivate one’s garden,” a philosophy that rejects excessive optimism and metaphysical speculation in favor of the most basic pragmatism.

Filled with wit, intelligence, and an abundance of dark humor, Candide is relentless and unsparing in its attacks upon corruption and hypocrisy—in religion, government, philosophy, science, and even romance. Ultimately, this celebrated work says that it is possible to challenge blind optimism without losing the will to live and pursue a happy life. (Source: Back cover of book)

This is not a particularly meaningful movie and it is likely many of you would not care for it.  It is silly, but I thought a fun diversion from life’s seriousness; especially if you are on a plane flying across the Atlantic.

After four years of college, young Alice (Dakota Johnson) decides she needs a break from her long-term boyfriend Josh. Excited and ready for new challenges, the eager grad moves to New York to take a job as a paralegal.

Helping her navigate her way through an unfamiliar city is Robin (Rebel Wilson), a fun-loving, wild co-worker who enjoys partying and one-night stands. With Robin as her freewheeling guide, Alice can now learn how to get free drinks, meet men and enjoy the single lifestyle.

Spire of Dublin

Wk 24 Dublin Needle

The spire was designed by Ian Ritchie Architects, who sought an “Elegant and dynamic simplicity bridging art and technology”

The first section was installed on 18 December 2002. Five more 20 m (66 ft) sections were added with the last one installed on 21 January 2003. The spire is an elongated cone of diameter 3 m (9.8 ft) at the base, narrowing to 15 cm (5.9 in) at the top.

Construction of the world’s tallest sculpture was delayed because of difficulty in obtaining planning permission and environmental regulations. It is constructed from eight hollow tubes of stainless steel and features a tuned mass damper, designed by engineers Arup, to counteract sway. The steel underwent shot peening to alter the quality of light reflected from it.

The pattern around the base of the Spire is based on a core sample of earth and rock formation taken from the ground where the spire stands. The pattern was applied by bead blasting the steel through rubber stencil masks whose patterns were created by water jet cutting based on core sample drawings supplied by the contractor.(Source:  Wikipedia)

05/30/16 – Memorial Day

CURRENT EVENTS

Memorial Day

Wk 23 Graves_at_Arlington_on_Memorial_Day

The gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.

The holiday, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers.

By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

The first widely publicized observance of a Memorial Day-type observance after the Civil War was in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865. During the war, Union soldiers who were prisoners of war had been held at the Hampton Park Race Course in Charleston; at least 257 Union prisoners died there and were hastily buried in unmarked graves.

Together with teachers and missionaries, black residents of Charleston organized a May Day ceremony in 1865, which was covered by national papers. The freedmen cleaned up and landscaped the burial ground, building an enclosure and an arch labeled “Martyrs of the Race Course”.  Nearly 10,000 people, mostly freedmen, gathered on May 1 to commemorate the war dead.

The United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) is a national monument in Arlington, Virginia, United States. The war memorial is dedicated to all U.S. Marine Corps personnel who have died in the defense of the United States since 1775.

The memorial was inspired by the iconic 1945 photograph of six servicemen raising an American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

Upon first seeing the photograph, sculptor Felix de Weldon created a maquette for a sculpture based on it in a single weekend. He and architect Horace W. Peaslee designed the memorial. Their proposal was presented to Congress. In 1947, a federal foundation was established to raise funds for the memorial. (Source:  Wikipedia)

Rome: An Empire’s Story

by Greg Woolf

Normally, I recommend very easy to read books, but every so often if you wish to be extraordinary, you need to read a book on something that interests you, that may not happen to be an “easy read”.  For me, my interest is in Rome.

Wk 22 Rome book

The very idea of empire was created in ancient Rome and even today traces of its monuments, literature, and institutions can be found across Europe, the Near East, and North Africa–and sometimes even further afield.

In Rome, historian Greg Woolf expertly recounts how this mammoth empire was created, how it was sustained in crisis, and how it shaped the world of its rulers and subjects–a story spanning a millennium and a half of history.

The personalities and events of Roman history have become part of the West’s cultural lexicon, and Woolf provides brilliant retellings of each of these, from the war with Carthage to Octavian’s victory over Cleopatra, from the height of territorial expansion under the emperors Trajan and Hadrian to the founding of Constantinople and the barbarian invasions which resulted in Rome’s ultimate collapse.

Throughout, Woolf carefully considers the conditions that made Rome’s success possible and so durable, covering topics as diverse as ecology, slavery, and religion. Woolf also compares Rome to other ancient empires and to its many later imitators, bringing into vivid relief the Empire’s most distinctive and enduring features.

As Woolf demonstrates, nobody ever planned to create a state that would last more than a millennium and a half, yet Rome was able, in the end, to survive barbarian migrations, economic collapse and even the conflicts between a series of world religions that had grown up within its borders, in the process generating an image and a myth of empire that is apparently indestructible.

Based on new research and compellingly told, this sweeping account promises to eclipse all previously published histories of the empire. (Source: Oxford University Press)

American Gothic is a painting by Grant Wood in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wood’s inspiration came from what is now known as the American Gothic House, and his decision to paint the house along with “the kind of people I fancied should live in that house.”

The painting shows a farmer standing beside a woman. The figures were modeled by Wood’s sister, Nan Wood Graham and Graham’s dentist. The woman is dressed in a colonial print apron evoking 19th-century Americana, and the man is holding a pitchfork. [ ]

During his lifetime, Imhotep earned many honors and titles of a social and religious character which no other commoner had attained before including Chancellor of the King of Egypt, First in Line after the King of Upper Egypt, High Priest of Heliopolis, and Administrator of the Great Palace.
