The sculpture captures the moment when Jesus, taken down from the cross, is given to his mother Mary.

Mary is represented as being very young for the mother of an approximately 33-year-old son, which is not uncommon in depictions of the Passion of Christ at the time. Various explanations have been suggested for this. One is that her youth symbolizes her incorruptible purity, as Michelangelo himself said to his biographer, the compatriot and Roman sculptor Ascanio Condivi:

It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed.

The statue had to be restored after the figure of Mary was vandalized in 1972; after the incident, the statue was protected by a bulletproof glass screen

Wanda Jackson

1958

Wanda LaVonne Jackson (born October 20, 1937) is an American retired singer and songwriter. Since the 1950s, she has recorded and released music in the genres of rock, country and gospel. She was among the first women to have a career in rock and roll, recording a series of 1950s singles that helped give her the nickname “The Queen of Rockabilly”. She is also counted among the first female stars in the genre of country music.

Wanda & Elvis

After Jackson spent time touring with Elvis Presley, the pair’s relationship became romantic in 1955. He asked her to make the relationship official by giving Jackson a small diamond ring that she wore on a necklace. In her autobiography, she explained that Presley “won my heart as I was just beginning to understand what it really meant to embrace my femininity and express myself as a young woman.” According to Jackson, the pair’s relationship ended in 1956 once Presley began appearing in films and Colonel Tom Parker took control of his career.

We’re All Just Walking Each Other Home

When you allow someone to say in your presence that they want to kill the President, without you pushing back; you are not helping that person. And if you encourage that kind of talk, well shame on you.

I may be mistaken, but I view that level of “extreme” dissatisfaction has more to do with their dissatisfaction of their own life, than  political positions that can be addressed every two years in national elections. 

Do what you can to make them feel better about themselves.

“So many people spend their health gaining wealth,

and then have to spend their wealth to regain their

health.”

Uncle Tony would likely add to the above quote the word trying, since once you lose your health, it isn’t always possible to regain it.

 

Do not under any circumstances, neglect your health for work or even for family. Uncle Tony said, “There is a reason the airlines tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first. It is because if you can’t help yourself, you aren’t going to be able to help anyone else.”

 

As for your team members, we all have seen team members who have failed to take care of their health and yet turn in amazing performances. Perhaps, had they maintained their health, they may have been able to accomplish still more or for a longer period in their lives. But that is beside the point; the important thing is to care about your team members and to encourage them to have healthy and long lives.

 

Speaking of health, Uncle Tony told me a mother once said she was worried about her daughter’s strange eating habits. She told him her daughter just lies in bed and only eats yeast and car wax. Uncle Tony said, “I would not worry too much about her. She will probably rise and shine.”

Book of the Week

As the weather becomes warmer,

thoughts turn to vacations.

Uncle Tony believed that vacations are an absolute must. Everyone needs to get out of the work environment for a period of time to recharge. Plus, often the time away from work may give a person a fresh perspective on how to do the work better upon their return.

 

A less positive reason why people should be required to take vacations is that it is fraud-prevention tool. People engaged in fraudulent activities typically need to be in the workplace to keep their activities from surfacing.

 

There are those who feel their vacation time is sacred. Nevertheless, you should still be reachable via email, text, or phone by whomever you left in charge. There is always the possibility of a business emergency or something of a critical personal nature that you need to know about.

 

The key is to leave someone in charge who can make decisions and whose judgment you trust. They will not intrude upon your vacation unless it is necessary.

 

When it comes to vacations, Uncle Tony said, “A journey of a thou-sand miles begins with a cash advance.”

Movie of the Week

This three season show first came out on ABC in September 2011, and is now available on Netflix.

I enjoyed all three seasons, which I just finished watching last week.

This is a very readable and practical book that will help your thinking. 

Philosophy for Everyday Life

For example, “Chapter 7 – I Have My Principles”, makes a distinction between tastes and principles.

Taste

If one prefers to drink organic fair-trade coffee and another prefers to drink the cheapest brand, that may simply be a matter of taste.  

Principle

But if one drinks organic fair-trade coffee on principle and would not drink the other brand on principle, that becomes much more than taste. Because when one acts on principle, than logically, they need to believe that everyone should do the same.  

Application

It is easier to get along with people when we have differences based upon tastes. It gets harder to do so when we feel those differences are based upon principles. So, are our differences really based on principles or are they merely differences in taste.
