Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.

If you have never taken an art history course and yet have an interest in Art, or perhaps you need a refresher from a former art history course, you may want to consider this book.

It is not an easy read, but it is very informative and the pictures are magnificent.

Do you see perhaps, just a cart driving to a city. Maybe you should look a bit more closely.

The Phantom Cart (1933)

In Phantom Cart, we see, at the centre of a bright arid plain, a two-wheeled wagon heading towards a city. The shape of the cart seems to blend with the city, thus becoming its own destination. The effect is an illusion of perspective in which the painter uses his skill to try to confuse us.

Where we expect to see the wheels, there are instead two stakes driven into the ground. The characters seen sitting in the wagon are identified with the architecture of the city in the background.

In this painting, as in other optical illusions used by the painter, “We see a cart and a city or both elements at the same time.”
