Meditations: Marcus Aurelius

I have just seen the first six episodes of this ten episode series and thought it was very witty, and fun for the entire family, If you have children, this is a delightful film to watch with them,

MISCELLANEOUS

The following isn’t for everyone

However, I thought a few of you

may want to dig a bit deeper into

determinism.

Only one extant fragment is attributed to Leucippus, taken from On Mind: “Nothing happens at random, but everything for a reason and by necessity”. Leucippus believed that all things must happen deterministically, as the positions and motions of the atoms guarantee that they will collide in a certain way, invoking the principle of causality. (Source: Wikipedia)

I take determinism to say, there is no such thing as free will, which appeals to a number of scholars. I believe I recall Steven Hawking saying the calculations are so complex, one may as well assume fee will.

I also recall a story about two Chinese monks, with the first monk telling the second monk that there was no such thing as free will.

The second monk hit the first monk with his cane.

The first monk got angry and said, “Why did you do that?”

The second monk said, “Don’t blame me, I don’t have free will” 😊

    • Thank you so much and the way I am feeling right now, every day is fantastic. I’m so glad the worse is behind me. Free will, what a complicated topic, at least for some of us. It is surprising how much ancient stories can lend themselves to the present 🙂

  1. Glad you’re up and about! That cat comic is hilarious, and too true.

This week we saw Kiss Me, Stupid with Dean Martin, Kim NovaK, and Ray Walston (plus a whole lotta bit parts by famous stars). It is dated (I mean it’s not very pc), but it is such a good movie.

  2. Long time William and hope all is well. Sunday is usually the day I visit word press and here you are. All the content of your post is great. I will especially forward The Beatles birthday video to a friend Janet who has an August birthday. I will also remember my mum r.i.p Whose birthday would have been the day after.
I will place your book on my Amazon list.
    Thank you for sharing 😊

    • Thank you so much. It has been a problem since mid-October, when I first went to the emergency room. In total three times on the operating table and twice to the emergency room, but finally I can see the light at the end of this long tunnel.

  3. Ah…gotcha. Wow and holy cow, Allen! I’m so glad the light is now visible in that tunnel. I hope it gets brighter and brighter. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
