Book of the Week

This is a book about strategy and I believe it lends itself to any endeavor, if you study it throughly. It is not just for the martial artist.

Musashi’s Book of Five Rings

Movie of the Week

There are a few exceptional films that I watch over and over, but for the most part, films substitute action for thought. So this week I am back to watching Pawn Stars. If you have never seen Pawn Stars, this will give you a taste of what that show is like.

Music of the Week

I’m going to dedicate this week’s song to my Bundy Tubing buddy Bill Burns, where ever he may be.

Extraordinary Person of the Week

Art Little

Art is Chair of the Michigan APF/AAPF and has just successfully put on the 2025 APF/AAPF National Championship contest.

He is also my friend, coach and the person who got me to return to Powerlifting  ten years ago in 2015.

Art of the Week

The Treachery of Images (1929)

by Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte

René Magritte’s “This Is Not a Pipe” (or “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”) is a famous painting that explores the relationship between words, images, and reality.    It demonstrates that a picture of a pipe is not a pipe itself, but rather a representation of one. The text directly contradicts the image, highlighting the arbitrary nature of language and its connection to objects.

Joke of the Week

Uncle Tony has a great sense of humor, that I included at the end of each of his topics. This particular Uncle Tony story was at the end of his Topic 12: Budgets.   Although Uncle Tony was not fond of the typical corporate budget process, he did tell me there was one time when he found it useful.   I said, “Knowing how much you dislike the corporate budget process, I want to hear how you found it useful?”   Uncle Tony said, “Well, one time at work, my wife appears unexpectedly and walks into my office, which was awkward.”   I said, “How so?”   “Well, my secretary was sitting on my lap and I was talking on the phone when my wife walked in.”   I asked, “So, what did you do?”   Uncle Tony replied, “I said into the phone, I don’t care about these budget cuts, I cannot continue to run this office with only one chair.”

When gym folks talk about chest or leg day,

this is definitely not what they are referring to.

  1. Congrats on your medals! I’ve just gotten back into kickbacks and hammer curls with dumb bells–just trying to hold that jiggly arm stuff at bay for as long as possible! lol
