What better art for this particular week, than the statue of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty.  Known to the Romans, as Venus. 

Venus de Milo

Aphrodite of Milos, better known as the Venus de Milo, is an ancient Greek statue and one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture. Created sometime between 130 and 100 BC, the statue is believed to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty (Venus to the Romans).

It is a marble sculpture, slightly larger than life-size at 203 cm (6 ft 8 in) high. Part of an arm and the original plinth were lost following its discovery. It is currently on permanent display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The statue is named after the Greek island of Milos, where it was discovered. (Source: Wikipedia)

I first read this book in 1985, when it first came out.  I recently reviewed it and find it still provides a lot of worthwhile advice about how to be happy in the workplace.  

I would add, please be reasonable in your expectations.  There is a reason you are being paid to show up.  It the experience was going to be great, you would be charged admission.

This is art on a grand scale. Below you will read that the Japanese signed the surrender papers on the deck of this battle ship.  I served in Viet Nam with a sailor, who was on that ship and saw the signing.

USS Missouri

USS Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and is best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan which ended World War II.

In World War II she fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and shelled the Japanese home islands, and she fought in the Korean War. She was decommissioned in 1955 into the United States Navy reserve fleets (the “Mothball Fleet”), but reactivated and modernized in 1984 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan, and provided fire support during Operation Desert Storm in January/February 1991.

Missouri was finally decommissioned on 31 March 1992. In 1998, she was donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association and became a museum ship at Pearl Harbor. (Source: Wikipedia)

EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK

Marcus Antonius

Marcus Antonius (January 14, 83 BC – August 1, 30 BC), commonly known in English as Mark or Marc Antony, was a Roman politician and general.

Antony was a supporter of Julius Caesar, and served as one of his generals during the conquest of Gaul and the Civil War. Antony was appointed administrator of Italy while Caesar eliminated political opponents in Greece, North Africa, and Spain. After Caesar’s death in 44 BC, Antony joined forces with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, another of Caesar’s generals, and Octavian, Caesar’s great-nephew and adopted son, forming a three-man dictatorship known to historians as the Second Triumvirate. The Triumvirs defeated Caesar’s murderers, the Liberatores, at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, and divided the government of the Republic between themselves. Antony was assigned Rome’s eastern provinces, including the client kingdom of Egypt, then ruled by Cleopatra.

Relations among the triumvirs were strained as the various members sought greater political power. Civil war between Antony and Octavian was averted in 40 BC, when Antony married Octavian’s sister, Octavia. Despite this marriage, Antony carried on a love affair with Cleopatra, who bore him three children, further straining Antony’s relations with Octavian. Lepidus was expelled from the association in 36 BC, and in 33 BC disagreements between Antony and Octavian caused a split between the remaining Triumvirs. Their ongoing hostility erupted into civil war in 31 BC, as the Roman Senate, at Octavian’s direction, declared war on Cleopatra and proclaimed Antony a traitor. Later that year, Antony was defeated by Octavian’s forces at the Battle of Actium. Antony and Cleopatra fled to Egypt, where they committed suicide.

Art Garfunkel

Art Garfunkel was born on November 5, 1941, in Forest Hills, New York. He met fellow musician Paul Simon while in school and went on to form a band called Tom and Jerry. Though the duo didn’t find much success with the Tom and Jerry moniker, they began to gain a following after changing their name to Simon & Garfunkel and releasing songs that spoke to the generation of the 1960s and ’70s, such as “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “The Sound of Silence.” Garfunkel is a singer, an arranger, an actor, and a poet. 

EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK

Albert Einstein

German-born theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein (14 March, 1879 – 18 April, 1955) is world-renowned for his breakthrough in the field of physics. He established the relations between mass and energy by inventing the formula, E = MC2.
In 1921, he bagged the coveted Nobel Prize for discovering the law of Photoelectric Effect. He also has about 300 research papers to his credit, which include Brownian Motion and Theory of Relativity. He died in 1955 at the age of 76, working even in his last days.

Last Thursday (Jan. 11), we had the opportunity to attend one of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Neighborhood concerns.  If all you have been to are rock concerts, you should check out classical music at least once. 

The concert was held in the beautiful Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 

located in Southfield, MI, USA.

Bridget and her Grandmother are about to become roommates. However, what Bridget saw as a unique opportunity to stay with her favorite Nana in New York for the summer quickly turns into an experience she’ll never forget.

This is “not” an easy read (about 500 pages).  But if you want to know something about humans, this book will take you on an unforgettable journey from pre-human times to the French Revolution.

I’m now just wrapping up binge watching Season 6 of the famous Belgium detective.

An obvious influence on the early Poirot stories is that of Arthur Conan Doyle. In An Autobiography, Christie states, “I was still writing in the Sherlock Holmes tradition – eccentric detective, assistant, with a Lestrade-type Scotland Yard detective, Inspector Japp”. 

For his part, Conan Doyle acknowledged basing his detective stories on the model of Edgar Allan Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin and his anonymous narrator, and basing his character Sherlock Holmes on Joseph Bell, who in his use of “logic” prefigured Poirot’s reliance on his “little grey cells”.

Unlike the models mentioned above, Christie’s Poirot was clearly the result of her early development of the detective in her first book, written in 1916 and published in 1920. His Belgian nationality was interesting because of Belgium’s occupation by Germany, which also provided a plausible explanation of why such a skilled detective would be out of work and available to solve mysteries at an English country house. At the time of Christie’s writing, it was considered patriotic to express sympathy towards the Belgians, since the invasion of their country had constituted Britain’s cause for entering World War I. The congregation’s present, Southfield building was designed by Percival Goodman and has been described as Goodman’s work at the peak of his career. 

The San Francisco Examiner named the building one of the “top 10 breathtaking places of worship” in the United States. Dempsey (I affectionally called him “Pitbull”)

The death of any pet is always a tragedy, but even more so if it is due to a groomers incompetence and neglect.  

A couple of weeks ago Dempsey went to Petsmart to be groomed. He came home burned and cut all over his neck, with some sores elsewhere on his body. A vet said it was from the equipment getting too hot. Dempsey was put on Benadryl, and antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory. For the past couple weeks he’s lived with bandages around his neck, and a cone.

When a complaint was lodge with Petsmart, they refused to acknowledge what happened and said they would have to send everything to corporate.

Salvator Mundi is a painting of Christ as Salvator Mundi (Latin for Savior of the World) by Leonardo da Vinci, dated to c. 1500. The painting shows Jesus, in Renaissance dress, giving a benediction with his right hand raised and two fingers extended, while holding a transparent rock crystal orb in his left hand, signaling his role as savior of the world and master of the cosmos, and representing the ‘crystalline sphere’ of the heavens, as it was perceived during the Renaissance.. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519), more commonly Leonardo da Vinci or simply Leonardo, was an Italian Renaissance polymath whose areas of interest included invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, writing, history, and cartography. Sometimes credited with the inventions of the parachute, helicopter and tank.

Many historians and scholars regard Leonardo as the prime exemplar of the “Universal Genius” or “Renaissance Man”, an individual of “unquenchable curiosity” and “feverishly inventive imagination”, and he is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived.

Born out-of-wedlock to a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, in the region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Florentine painter Andrea del Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in the service of Ludovico il Moro in Milan. He later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice, and he spent his last years in France at the home awarded to him by Francis I of France.

Leonardo was, and is, renowned primarily as a painter. Among his works, the Mona Lisa is the most famous and most parodied portrait and The Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting of all time. Leonardo’s drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on items as varied as the euro coin, textbooks, and T-shirts.

Ginevra de’ Benci

Ginevra de’ Benci is a portrait painting by Leonardo da Vinci of the 15th-century Florentine aristocrat Ginevra de’ Benci (born c. 1458). 

The oil-on-wood portrait was acquired by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1967 for $5 million —a record price at the time—came from the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Fund and was paid to the Princely House of Liechtenstein. It is the only painting by Leonardo on public view in the Americas.

The portrait is one of the highlights of the National Gallery of Art, and is admired by many for its portrayal of Ginevra’s temperament. Ginevra is beautiful, but austere; she has no hint of a smile and her gaze, although forward, seems indifferent to the viewer. (Source: Wikipedia)

The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci that has been described as “the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, the most parodied work of art in the world”. 

The painting is thought to be a portrait of Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, and is in oil on a white Lombardy poplar panel.

The title of the painting, comes from a description by Renaissance art historian Giorgio Vasari, who wrote “Leonardo undertook to paint, for Francesco del Giocondo, the portrait of Mona Lisa, his wife.” Mona in Italian is a polite form of address originating as “ma donna” – similar to “Ma’am” in English. 

Vasari’s account of the Mona Lisa comes from his biography of Leonardo published in 1550, 31 years after the artist’s death. It has long been the best-known source of information on the work and identity of the sitter. Leonardo’s assistant Salaì, at his death in 1524, owned a portrait which in his personal papers was named la Gioconda, a painting bequeathed to him by Leonardo.

That Leonardo painted such a work, and its date, were confirmed in 2005 when a scholar at Heidelberg University discovered a marginal note in a book, the note dated October 1503, was written by Leonardo’s contemporary Agostino Vespucci. This note states that Leonardo was at that time working on a painting of Lisa del Giocondo.

In response to the discovery of this document, Vincent Delieuvin, the Louvre representative, stated “Leonardo da Vinci was painting, in 1503, the portrait of a Florentine lady by the name of Lisa del Giocondo. About this we are now certain. Unfortunately, we cannot be absolutely certain that this portrait of Lisa del Giocondo is the painting of the Louvre.

The consensus of art historians in the 21st century maintains the long-held traditional opinion, that the painting depicts Lisa del Giocondo.
