For those that have followed this blog, you know I wanted to set new APF and AAPF National age/weight raw deadlift records.  

I did with my third final lift of 340 lbs

     

It would never have been possible without the help of one of the best powerlifting coach/trainers in the country – Art

I’ve watched all of Seasons 4, 5 and 6 of this excellent mystery series.  If you like mysteries, these are good and well done.

Gaius Marius

Gaius Marius (157 BC – January 13, 86 BC) was a Roman general and statesman. He held the office of consul an unprecedented seven times during his career.

He was also noted for his important reforms of Roman armies, authorizing recruitment of landless citizens, and reorganizing the structure of the legions into separate cohorts (Cohort being roughly 500 men and 10 cohorts made up a Roman legion of 5,000 men or the equivalent of a modern military battalion).

Marius defeated the invading Germanic tribes (the Teutones, Ambrones, and the Cimbri), for which he was called “the third founder of Rome.” His life and career were significant in Rome’s transformation from Republic to Empire.

BOOK OF THE WEEK (LIBRO DE LA SEMANA)

I found this to be an interesting and very easy to read book.  And although much unfairness is described in the book, nobility can also be found here and there, as when Chief He Dog describes four rules to being a chief:

• Be brave and out-spoken
• Ambitious
• Honest at all times
• Kind to all creatures

If if you aren’t planning on being a chief, those are still some pretty good rules to live by.

In this book the killing of Crazy Horse is viewed from three widely different perspectives—that of Chief He Dog, the victim’s friend and lifelong companion; that of William Garnett, who was guide and interpreter for Lieutenant William P. Clark, on special assignment to General Crook; and that of Dr. Valentine McGillycuddy, the medical officer who attended Crazy Horse in his last hours.

Death on the Nile (1978)

Peter Ustinov plays the intrepid Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot in this star-studded  adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic mystery tale.

On a trip down the Nile, a hateful and arrogant heiress is murdered and any one of a boatload of celebrity suspects, all with motive and something to hide, may have committed the deed.

Amongst the suspects are Angela Lansbury as a ditzy romance novelist; Bette Davis as a snobbish socialite with Maggie Smith in tow as her embittered friend; Jack Warden as a comic Swiss doctor with a music hall accent; and Jon Finch as a rabid Marxist. I guess this is one way to get into the Christmas Spirit.

But another way is to go see a live performance of A Christmas Carol.

That is what we did with some close friends and it was a wonderful experience.

Perhaps, you may want to start a Christmas tradition by getting a group of your friends to go see this play.

If you are fortunate to live near a zoo that puts on a Christmas light show, that would be another possible Christmas tradition.

We live near The Detroit Zoo, that has a fantastic Christmas light show and it is always more fun to go with friends.  I’m so glad that Dean & Linda could join us this year.

I have been to Navy Pier in Chicago during Christmas many times  and it is always a thrill to see the Christmas Trees and Santa Clauses from various lands on display at Navy Pier.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, or simply Santa, is said to bring gifts to the homes of well-behaved (“good” or “nice”) children.  Below is a photo of Santa doing that.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

Just saw this at the theater and I thought it was well worth watching and everyone did a great job, but with that said I still miss David Suchet, who played Poirot back in 2011.  If you have seen this current movie, please comment and let us know what you think.

After seeing the 2017 version, I later streamed the 1974 version.  Both the 1974 and the 2017 versions have much to be said for them, but I still thought David Suchet, was the best Poirot.

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You (2011)

I liked this film, plus Lucy Liu and Aubrey Plaza appear in supporting roles, which just added to the film.  Aubrey’s character was a real trip.

Cuzco & Machu Picchu

I thought you might enjoy these photos Carol took during our visit to Machu Picchu.

Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire.  We got up around 4:30 a.m. and took a 2-hour bus ride to a train station.  From there, we took a 2-hour train ride to Machu Picchu city.  From there, we took a half-hour bus ride to get to where we began our climb up and then down into the valley to experience Machu Picchu.  It rained almost the entire time, but was well worth it.

Worf, son of Mogh, of the House of Martok, (2340 – ), was one of the single most influential people in Klingon and Federation politics of the late 24th century.

My bowling buddy John has a brother-in-law in Tennessee that has a hot dog stand.  He always calls out $2 dollar hot dog, $1 dollar water.  As he was doing this one day, someone started playing along on a makeshift drum.  Well it caught on and Sony  bought the rights to it.  And this is what came out of it.

Jean-Luc Picard

Jean-Luc Picard was born to Maurice and Yvette Picard in La Barre, France, on 13 July 2305.

The young Picard failed his first Starfleet Academy entrance exam, and, upon admission, met with numerous ethical/scholastic difficulties during his cadet career, but went on to flourish, developing a lifelong passion for archaeology, and he became the first freshman to win the Academy marathon. [Just shows one should never give up on a dream]

Deeply moral, highly logical, and intelligent, Picard is a master of diplomacy and debate who resolves seemingly intractable issues between multiple, sometimes implacable parties with a Solomon-like wisdom. Though such resolutions are usually peaceful, Picard is also shown using his remarkable tactical cunning in situations when it is required.

Picard has a fondness for detective stories, Shakespearean drama, and archeology. He is frequently shown drinking Earl Grey tea and issuing the order, “Make it so”.

By now you should all know at NYC was subject to another terrorist attack.  

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday filed terrorism charges against bike path attack suspect Sayfullo Saipov, who is accused of killing eight people and injuring a dozen more when he drove his car along a bike path in lower Manhattan Tuesday. (Source: CBSN)

The suspect was identified as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, 29, a Uzbekistan native who came to the US legally in 2010, authorities said. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Wednesday afternoon “that the individual identified in the New York City terror attack was admitted to the U.S. upon presentation of a passport with a valid diversity immigrant visa.”

The Diversity Immigrant Visa program, also known as the green card lottery, is a United States congressionally mandated lottery program for receiving a United States Permanent Resident Card. The Immigration Act of 1990 established the current and permanent Diversity Visa (DV) program.

The lottery is administered by the Department of State and conducted under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) as amended by the Immigration Act of 1990. The lottery makes available 50,000 permanent resident visas annually and aims to diversify the immigrant population in the United States, by selecting applicants from countries with low rates of immigration in the five years prior. An emotional and exuberant Shalane Flanagan came to the finish line of the New York City Marathon and enveloped herself in an American flag, the magnitude of what she had accomplished bringing her to tears and to her knees.

Flanagan became the first American woman since Miki Gorman won the second of her back-to-back NYC marathons in 1977 to win the race, finishing in an unofficial time of 2:26:53.

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

I’ve seen this film several times and I always enjoy it.  I guess it is my kind of film (Science Fiction with a little romance), plus Emily Blunt is in it and for you ladies–Matt Damon.

The Adjustment Bureau is a 2011 American science fiction thriller film loosely based on the Philip K. Dick short story, “Adjustment Team”. The film stars Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.

The film tells the story of a young man who discovers that what appear to be chance events in his life are controlled by a technologically advanced intelligence network. After an event not planned by these controllers occurs – a romantic encounter with a young dancer – he struggles against their manipulation despite their promise of a great future for him.

The film premiered at the Ziegfeld Theatre on February 14, 2011, and received positive reviews from critics, who praised Damon’s performance and his chemistry with Blunt. (Source: Wikipedia)

In Chapter 48 of my book, I talk about the value that comes from travel.  So perhaps you may want to put Romania on your bucket list of travel locations.  And if you are in Romania, of course you will want to see Bran Castle (aka Dracula’s Castle). 

Bran Castle – which perches on a dramatic hilltop near Brasov in central Romania – has long been linked to the toothsome vampire. Constructed in the early 14th century, it is open to the public, who are able to peer into its creaky rooms and dark passageways. 

Sharp-eyed tourists will point out that Dracula did not exist.

And they would – rather obviously – be correct. The most famous vampire of all was, of course, created by the Irish novelist Bram Stoker in his iconic Gothic novel Dracula, published in 1897. (Source: DailyMail.com)

This “classic” movie was filmed at The Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island.  Since I am going to be staying at The Grand Hotel next week, I thought I should watch it again.

Mackinac Bridge

The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac to connect the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of the U.S. state of Michigan.

Opened in 1957, the 26,372-foot (4.995 mi) bridge is the world’s 19th-longest main span and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere.  The bridge connects the city of St. Ignace on the north end with the village of Mackinaw City on the south.

Envisioned since the 1880s, the bridge was designed by the engineer David B. Steinman and completed in 1957 only after many decades of struggles to begin construction. However the preliminary plans for the bridge were done by an engineer at the firm, Abul Hasnat.

Windsor, Canada Hockey Hall of Fame

It isn’t publicized; however, Windsor has an excellent Hockey Hall of Fame.  I was fortunate to be one of a select group of individuals given a tour of the museum last Saturday.  It was a rare treat and my video in no way captures the magnificence of this fine collection of hockey mementos collected over a life time.

Bendito Infierno (Don’t Tempt Me)

October is Halloween, so why not watch a movie that has a devil in it. He is a cool devil, but he would not allow his staff air conditioning, since he thought it would make them look bad if word ever got out.

I have watched this movie many times and I still enjoy it. The original dialogue is a combination of  Spanish, English and French, but you can also I watched this movie with English Subtitles.  I think it is thought-provoking.

In Heaven, the last ten years have been tough—Hell has been winning the battle between Good and Evil. The managers of Heaven receive a request by a mother to save her son’s soul and see the possibility of winning the soul of a boxer named Manny as an opportunity to shift the balance of power.

Although Manny is severely in debt and is even thinking of suicide, Lola (Victoria Abril), an angel, is sent to Earth to take over the role of the boxer’s wife. To counter this, Hell’s manager Jack Davenport decides to send one of his more troublesome agents, Carmen (Penélope Cruz), to fight back by impersonating Manny’s cousin.  (Source: Wikipedia)

Machu Picchu, Perú.

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel situated on a mountain ridge 7,970 ft above sea level. It is in the Cusco Region in Peru, above the Sacred Valley, which is 50 mi northwest of Cuzco and through which the Urubamba River flows.

Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was constructed as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472). It is the most familiar icon of Inca civilization. The Incas built the estate around 1450 but abandoned it a century later at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Although known locally, it was not known to the Spanish during the colonial period and remained unknown to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.

Machu Picchu was built-in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. 

Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historic Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide Internet poll. (Source: Wikipedia)

Michael

Michael is 87 years old and is in absolutely fantastic shape.  He did a part of the Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu, almost all of it in the rain.  I have no idea what his diet is that keeps him in such great shape.  But I am sure his positive outlook also has something to do with it.
