BOOK OF THE WEEK
Geronimo His Own Story
By Geronimo as told to S. M. Barrett
This book contains one of the most extraordinary and invaluable documents in the annals of Native American history—the authentic testament of a remarkable “war shaman” who for several years held off both Mexico and the United States in fierce defense of Apache lands.
During 1905 and 1906, Geronimo, the legendary Apache warrior and honorary war chief, dictated his story through a native interpreter to S.M. Barrett, then superintendent of schools in Lawton, Oklahoma. As Geronimo was by then a prisoner of war, Barrett had made appeals all the way up the chain of command to President Teddy Roosevelt for permission to record the words of the “Indian outlaw.”
Geronimo came to each interview knowing exactly what he wanted to cover, beginning with his telling of the Apache creation story. When, at the end of the first session, Barrett posed a question, the only answer he received was a pronouncement—“Write what I have spoken.”

ART OF THE WEEK
EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK
Eddie Cochran

Ray Edward Cochran (October 3, 1938 – April 17, 1960) was an American rock and roll musician. Cochran’s songs, such as “Twenty Flight Rock”, “Summertime Blues”, “C’mon Everybody” and “Somethin’ Else”, captured teenage frustration and desire in the mid-1950s and early 1960s.
Cochran died at the age of 21 in St Martin’s Hospital, Bath, Somerset, after a road accident at the end of his British tour on 16 April 1960.
In 1987, Cochran was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His songs have been recorded by a wide variety of recording artists. Paul McCartney himself chose Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock” as his audition piece, assured to impress John Lennon by his performance of it, which he did and was hired as a member of Lennon’s skiffle group The Quarrymen, which later was renamed The Beatles. Yes and it was a very easy read. I have read a few other books on Geronimo, so some of this book was familiar, but other parts were either new of a different perspective on things I had read in the past. As always, thank you very much Vera for commenting.

Geronimo’s story is an easy read and an important aspect of his story; but, I think it needs to be read in conjunction with other books about Geronimo. As always Michele, thank you very much for commenting.
