The well-to-do protected their sons via college deferments. Then they decided to go one better and simply get rid of the draft leaving our military to the poor and those who wish to be warriors, rather than sharing the burden throughout society.

Marquis de Lafayette

Marquis de Lafayette (6 September 1757 – 20 May 1834), was a French military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. A close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette was also key figure in the French Revolution of 1789.

He became convinced that the American cause in its revolutionary war was noble, and travelled to the New World seeking glory in it. There, he was made a major-general, though initially the 19-year-old was not given troops to command.

Wounded during the Battle of Brandywine, he still managed to organize an orderly retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war, he returned home to lobby for an increase in French support. He again sailed to America in 1780, and was given senior positions in the Continental Army. In 1781, troops in Virginia under his command blocked forces led by Cornwallis until other American and French forces could position themselves for the decisive Siege of Yorktown.

Lafayette died on 20 May 1834, and is buried in Picpus Cemetery in Paris, under soil from Bunker Hill.

Don’t Be Someone’s Supper

Some wolves were trying to surprise some sheep. Unable to reach the peaceable animals because of the dogs that were guarding them, they decided to use a trick to get what they wanted.

They sent some delegates to ask the sheep to give up their dogs. It was the dogs, they said, who created the bad blood between them. If only the sheep would get rid of them, peace would reign between sheep and wolves.

The sheep did not foresee what was going to happen and gave up the dogs. The wolves could now follow their instincts: they made supper of the unguarded sheep. (Source: Demosthenes via Plutarch or Fables of Aesop)
