Movie of the Week

Why not check out some of these older film jewels.

This one is particularly funny.

The Muse (1999)

The Muse is a 1999 American comedy film starring Albert Brooks, Sharon Stone, Andie MacDowell and Jeff Bridges.

Stone portrays a muse who is tasked with reviving the career of a once-celebrated Hollywood screenwriter, played by Brooks. The film also features numerous cameos from well-known filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese and James Cameron. (Source: Wikipedia)

Music of the Week

Add’l Info

The song is the first collaboration in songwriting by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector.

The title “Da Doo Ron Ron” was initially just nonsense syllables used as dummy line to separate each stanza and chorus until proper lyrics could be written, but Spector liked it so much that he kept it.

Extraordinary People of the Week

Muses

In ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Muses are the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts. They were considered the source of the knowledge embodied in the poetry, lyric songs, and myths that were related orally for centuries in ancient Greek culture.

The number and names of the Muses differed by region, but from the Classical period the number of Muses was standardized to nine, and their names were generally given as Calliope, Clio, Polyhymnia, Euterpe, Terpsichore, Erato, Melpomene, Thalia, and Urania.

Art of the Week

Here is a drawing by one of my favorite artists,

Kurt Hasley Frederickson.

I have four of his original paintings,

and

I’m always looking to acquire more.

This particular drawing, I grabbed off the internet. .

Some things, you probably want to fade away.

Other things,

you probably should find a way to hold on to

or

at least hold on to their memory.

  1. I always wondered what “da do Ron Ron” meant. Nonsense syllables to hold a place while writing the song … I get it. It’s cool that the syllables stuck.

The Muse is a good movie. This week the hubster and I saw Lover Come Back with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Hilarious!

    • Yes, I thought the history behind those nonsense syllables would be interesting. I found the Muse to be so funny. It is a film that I watch once a year and it never seems to disappoint. I will have to check out your film suggestion. As always, thank you for commenting Priscilla.

  2. Hi William,
Just ‘tuned in’ again before bed.
Your ‘I’m tired of being ordinary are you’ book arrives tomorrow from Amazon.
I look forward both to reading your book and your recent blogs.
    Take care. 😊

      • Hi William, your book arrived safely about an hour ago.

Already I feel your weekly approach will work for me. Always being one who always wants to ‘run before she can walk’ I feel the weekly lessons allow me to, as they say in Ulster ‘catch myself on’.

I hope to elaborate more on the former saying quite soon in a blog post and, with your permission, mention your book. The latter saying brings back memories of the lovely people I worked with when working in Enniskillen, Co.Fermanagh, Northern Ireland 1985 – 1988 as a Health Visitor against the background of ‘the troubles’. A blog post about this period may take a little more time. Wow, thank you William for allowing that reflection.

I have skimmed through your book and already feel ‘let off the hook’ (of my own making). I don’t think I ever read Desiderata properly until now.

Thank you so much and will be in touch.

      • Margaret, anything you care to do will be absolutely fine with me. I’ve been toying with updating the book, since it is 10 years old now. But, I have a few other projects I’m working on, so I’m not sure I want to invest the time right now. Still, I would be most interested in any observations you care to make. Bill

      • Hi Bill,
Yes, time is precious and moves on doesn’t it. I understand only too well
after all these years the importance of using your time and energy wisely.
Yes, a project started in another life’s chapter soon gets taken over as time goes on.
I will keep you posted how I am doing.
        Take care.
        Margaret.
