You need to have passion for what you are doing. Uncle Tony always loved repeating this story about the building of a cathedral during the Middle Ages as an example of the attitude that makes a person successful:

A man came across three masons who were working at chipping chunks of granite from large blocks.

The first seemed unhappy at his job, chipping away and often look-ing at his watch. When the man asked what it was that he was doing, the first mason replied, “I’m hammering this stupid rock, and I can’t wait ’til 5 when I can go home.”

The man asked a second mason, who was carefully hammering the granite block, what he was doing. The mason replied, “Well, I’m molding this block of rock so that it can be used with others to construct a wall. It’s not bad work, but I’ll sure be glad when it’s done.”

A third mason was passionately hammering at his block, taking time to stand back and admire his work. He chipped off small pieces until he was satisfied that it was the best he could do. When asked what he was doing, the mason stopped, looked upward, and proudly said, “I am building a cathedral!”

  2. Ah Bill,
    Brilliant post as always.
Strangely enough only last night I thought of our discussion about ‘I’m tired of being ordinary ‘ book. Thanks for the prompt because I seem to let other’s agendas take over.
I did read week one and will definitely revisit as soon as I can.
    😊

  3. Coincidentally Bill I put aside ‘I’m tired of being ordinary’ book last evening to revisit again today.
Thanks for sharing such a great post as always 😊

      • Forgive me, I didn’t initially understand your comment, although I should have. Now I realize you were referring to the Cathedral story. I think the story is simply illustrative of various workplace attitudes, rather a literal description of actual events. However, I have heard that mechanical clocks were in use in medieval Europe in the 1300s. I appreciate your comment and apologize for my failure to comprehend your initial comment.

      • Indeed, they were, but so expensive and rare that you wouldn’t find on construction places. Watches to wear on your wrist came not before the laste 19 c. and were extreme expensive in the beginning.
        Anyway, keep well
