Why Did The Dinosaurs Become Extinct

There are many theories of why the dinosaurs became extinct, such as climate changes that impacted their supply of food. Other theories were that other animals found dinosaur eggs to be a tasty treat. Still another theory suggests their bodies became too large for their small brains. I could go on and on, with all kinds of theories, but this is the one that most appeals to me:

I’m not sure, but I tend to classify Buddhism as a philosophy, because it does not involve worshipping a supernatural entity. But, it really does not matter what you call it; it is what it is.

I found this a very easy to read and informative book about a philosophy/religon that goes back 2,500 years ago.

There have been a lot of movies protraying  Davy Crockett. If you would like to know as close as we can come to the real story of this American hero, this book produced by The University of Tennessee Press is as close as it gets.

I found it a very interesting book to read.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK

This film is a love story set in a time of a zombie pandemic. It seemed all one needed to do in order to stop a pandemic was to not be fearful of other people and to practice a little love for other people. But, like the “Boneys”, some of you may be too far gone.

Warm Bodies (2013)

Warm Bodies is a 2013 American paranormal romantic zombie comedy film based on Isaac Marion’s novel of the same name, which in turn is inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The film stars Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Analeigh Tipton, and John Malkovich.

The film focuses on the development of the relationship between Julie (Palmer), a young woman, and “R” (Hoult), a zombie, and how their eventual romance develops, causing R to slowly return to human form. The film is noted for displaying human characteristics in zombie characters, and for being told from a zombie’s perspective.

Normally, this is the point where I ask if you have seen the movie and if you liked it. I’m not going to do this, because this movie isn’t for everyone. But if you are a romantic with a sense of humor and can tolerate zombies, you might like it. I myself, was once a zombie, as you can see below (that is me with the tie).

Yevgeniy Khudoleev currently holds the WPC World’s Raw Deadlift in the 90 Kg (198.2 lbs.) Masters  7 (Age 70 to 74) category with a deadlift of 200 Kg (440.7 lbs.).

I met him back in 2015 in Maia, Portugal, where I came in second to him. He is a very cool guy and I found him to be an inspiration.

Neil deGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson (born October 5, 1958) is an American astrophysicist, planetary scientist, author, and science communicator.

Tyson studied at Harvard University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Columbia University. In 1994, he joined the Hayden Planetarium as a staff scientist and the Princeton faculty as a visiting research scientist and lecturer. In 1996, he became director of the planetarium and oversaw its $210 million reconstruction project, which was completed in 2000.

From 1995 to 2005, Tyson wrote monthly essays in the “Universe” column for Natural History magazine, some of which were later published in his books Death by Black Hole (2007) and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry (2017).  

In 2014, he hosted the television series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, a successor to Carl Sagan’s 1980 series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.

The U.S. National Academy of Sciences awarded Tyson the Public Welfare Medal in 2015 for his “extraordinary role in exciting the public about the wonders of science”.

I’ve been a fan of Groundhog Day ever since I saw the film, which I will mention in the Movie of the Week section of this post. I even went so far as to start the Royal Oak Groundhog Club. Alas, BlackFinn in Royal Oak is no more and the Royal Oak Groundhog Club has been dormant for years.

I think after this pandemic is behind us, I’m going to see if I can’t give the Royal Oak Groundhog Club some CPR.

Generally, I like short and easy to read books, but once in a while a book comes along with so much to say that it is worth the effort.

This is “not” an easy read (about 500 pages).  But if you want to know something about humans, this book will take you on an unforgettable journey from pre-human times to the French Revolution.

Although this book mentions strength training, it puts more emphasis on aerobic exercise. Although aerobic exercise is important, I don’t think strength training should take a back seat to aerobic training.

Nevertheless, I think this is a very helpful book to prepare you for your later years and there is no time like right now, regardless of your age, to start preparing.

I probably would not have done this, were it not for the pandemic. I’ve watched all 26 James Bond films in order starting with the 1962 film Dr. No and ending with the 2015 film Spectre. One cannot help to recognize how much society changed during those years if you watch them in order.
