04/30/23 – Cinco de Mayo

CURRENT EVENTS

Cinco de Mayo

More popular in the United States than Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become associated with the celebration of Mexican-American culture.

Celebrations began in California, where they have been observed annually since 1863. The day gained nationwide popularity beyond those of Mexican-American heritage in the 1980s due to advertising campaigns by beer, wine, and tequila companies; today, Cinco de Mayo generates beer sales on par with the Super Bowl.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

Brian Tracy writes a lot of what I call self-help books, which to me is a negative. However, I read this book back in 2014 and have reviewed the notes and highlights I have made in the book several times, including last week. I still think it is a helpful book.

Change Your Thinking

Change Your Life

By Brian Tracy

This book provides a lot of solid advice. For example, “Everything you do that requires time represents a choice. … You must be adamant about not spending your time on activities of low value.”

MOVIE OF THE WEEK

Background

In 2017, La Bamba was included in the annual selection of 25 motion pictures added to the National Film Registry of the US Library of Congress being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and recommended for preservation.

ART  OF THE WEEK

The Detroit Industry Murals (1932–1933) are a series of frescoes by the Mexican artist Diego Rivera, consisting of twenty-seven panels depicting industry at the Ford Motor Company and in Detroit.

Together they surround the interior Rivera Court in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Painted between 1932 and 1933, they were considered by Rivera to be his most successful work.

On April 23, 2014, the Detroit Industry Murals were designated by the Department of Interior as a National Historic Landmark.

EXTRAORDINARY PERSON OF THE WEEK

Emiliano Zapata

Emiliano Zapata was a leading figure in the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920), during which he formed and commanded the Liberation Army of the South, an important revolutionary brigade. Followers of Zapata were known as Zapatistas. (Source: Biography.com)

JOKE OF THE WEEK

PHYSICAL TRAITS

CHARACTER TRAITS

You are responsible for your life.

SOCIAL TRAITS

People think the USA is divided today.

A veteran of the Union Army shakes hands with a Confederate veteran

at the Gettysburg reunion, Pennsylvania, c. 1913.

It is a bit unfortunate that in this photo,

they both look like they’re thinking about finishing the job.

However, the lesson is that in the end, we are all Americans and we should  be more respectful of one another than we have been in some time now.

LEARNING TRAITS

It isn’t always easy staying positive,

but you should try.
