01/14/24 – Be Thankful

CURRENT EVENTS

It seems like for the vast majority of us, regardless of how challenging our situation my be, we don’t have to look very far to see someone dealing with  more challenging issues.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

I’ve read a few books by Mary Beard on the classic world and found them easy to read and very informative. If the classic world is of interest to you, I suggest you look into some of her books on the subject.

Confronting The Classics

By Mary Beard

Mary Beard, drawing on thirty years of teaching and writing about Greek and Roman history, provides a panoramic portrait of the classical world, a book in which we encounter not only Cleopatra and Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar and Hannibal, but also the common people―the millions of inhabitants of the Roman Empire, the slaves, soldiers, and women. MOVIE OF THE WEEK

For a while, I thought I would like to be a screen writer, and wrote several short films. After I saw Café, I gave up the idea of being a screenwriter, because I did not believe I could ever write a screenplay this good.

Café (2010)

A good-hearted musician struggles to find a way to tell his beautiful barista coworker that he loves her, despite the fact that she is in a relationship with an abusive boyfriend.

Meanwhile, regulars and customers at the café where they work have their own problems and encounters. A police officer keeps his eye on his wayward cousin, who owes money to a dealer, and a married man contemplates his relationship with a good-looking new acquaintance.

However, one customer learns he is in fact the main character in the microcosm of the café, all designed by a young girl, who is actually God. (Source: Wikipedia)

EXTRAORDINARY PEOPLE OF THE WEEK

As I mentioned last week, it has been a very rough three months for me, with one health challenge after another. I am certain that I would not have made this far without Carol.

Carol

I am also certain I would not have made it without the combined efforts of the nurses, staff and doctors of the emergency room, my  primary care physician, my cardiologist, and my urologist.

I’m actually seeing some light at the end of this rather dark tunnel.

  1. Isn’t modern medicine amazing? I look forward to reading your Uncle Tony book. Thanks for the movie rec. This week, the hubster and I saw Role Play with Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo. I believe you were the one who recommended that movie, too; if so, thanks. We enjoyed it!

  2. Oof, I know what you mean, although my physical issues have been minor. But when it rains, it pours! Hope you’re feeling better and continue to do so.
    Cafe looks interesting and engaging.
On a side note, Jennifer Love Hewitt gave a disgusted, dirty look to my husband once. We were waiting to cross the street and she was in a car and he’d been looking at her trying to figure out if that was her or not, and, boy, it was like he’d physically accosted her or insulted her mother, lol. A little over the top, Jennifer. I guess some “stars” handle that stuff better than others.

    • Thank you so much for commenting. I guess stars (movie or other types), come in all different flavors and they probably have good days and bad days, almost like real people (smile). Still, they would not be stars without fans. Some recognize this and others are a bit indifferent. Again, thank you for commenting. I always appreciate hearing what people think of the posts.

    • Oh my gosh that is so true. I cannot believe all the people I know, who are in far more challenging health situations than the ones I find myself faced with. Thank you very much for your keen observation.

  3. As always, I enjoyed this week’s blog. Glad you are navigating your medical issues as well as you are. It’s always great to have a wonderful companion and you do. Cafe seems interesting but I have never seen it. I also feel the “Temptations “ were certainly a wonderful group, that sang and danced well. Looking forward to your new book.
The witty words are always thoughtful. I disagree with you; you definitely have what it takes to write whatever you might want to tackle. Continue to attend to your medical issues.

    • Thank you so much for your comments Wylene. It is always good to hear from you. As for medical challenges, I believe I can finally see some light at the end of this tunnel. I love the dance moves of those groups like the temptations. As for my book, I’m scheduled to receive a proof hardcopy this Saturday. So, it is getting closer and closer to being published. Thanks again Wylene for commenting.

  4. You are awesome William! Of course I Love reading your newsletter regularly, but instead of pushing you to continue with it I just want to send well wishes and you do what you’re comfortable doing while you work on being happy and healthy in your recovery. If it has become too much of a strain then let it go. Your writing has brought me a lot of joy and I very much appreciate it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts for so long! You are a lovely person. Take care
