Book of the Week

Choosing Civility

By P.M. Forni

When I listen to how many of our political leaders (both parties) talk and the way people who don’t even know what critical thinking is believe everything they hear in the media and internet, talk–I think this book is needed more than ever.

Movie of the Week

I’ve known about this film for years, but never got around to watching it until this week. Peacock streaming service is promoting a 2024 version, but I wanted to see what the original silent 1922 version was like. I found it interesting if you have an interest in Dracula or horror films. I can’t say I’m interested in either, but I do have a curiosity about things and a friend of mine once put me in a horror film he made.

Nosferatu –  is a 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film Nosferatu is an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. Various names and other details were changed from the novel, including Count Dracula being renamed Count Orlok. Those changes are often represented as a defense against copyright infringement accusations, Even with several details altered, Stoker’s widow sued over the adaptation’s copyright violation, and a court ruling ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. However, several prints of Nosferatu survived, and the film came to be regarded as an influential masterpiece of cinema and the horror genre. Critic and historian Kim Newman declared it as a film that set the template for the genre of horror film.

  1. I’ve seen Nosferatu. I didn’t know about the copyright controversy behind the movie. Interesting. This week I saw The Family Plan with Mark Wahlberg. It’s one of those edge-of-your-seat movies, fun!

Oh, that lifestyle vs prescription thing. And side effects vs prescriptions. As long as I’m cognitive and able, I’m going to work on the lifestyle side of things!

  2. Love the sausage/link joke. Where do you find these jokes?!
BTW, everyone was slobbering over the latest Nosferatu with Johnny Depp’s daughter. It was beautiful to look at, but for me the characters were somewhat two dimensional and the even though I usually love a slow burn, this one was sooooooo slow, lol. It feels weird, ’cause everyone else seems to love it.

    • Thank you for commenting. There are so many jokes floating around, the trick is to find the ones that are clever. Sometimes I get it right and sometimes I don’t. I have yet to see the latest Nosferatu, perhaps sooner or later I will take a look at it. Again, thank you for commenting.
