The life of a soldier in an army at war is rather harsh from the stories I have heard first hand from those that fought in WWII. This diary seems very real from what I have heard and it gives you in my opinion a good idea of what being in war can be like. I’m not sure if it is any better today and in my time the Vietnam War experience was horrible for so many.
If you are curious what war time soldiers go through, I think this book will give you an idea.
Eighteen-year-old German stonemason Jakob Walter served in the Grand Army of Napoleon between 1806 and 1813. His diary intimately records his trials: the long, grueling marches in Prussia and Poland, the disastrous Russian campaign, and the demoralizing defeat in a war few supported or understood. It is at once a compelling chronicle of a young soldier’s loss of innocence and an eloquent and moving portrait of the profound effects of all wars on the men who fight them.
“Vivid and gruesome … but also a story of human fortitude. … It reminds us that the troops Napoleon drove so mercilessly were actually more victims than victors—a side of Napoleon that should not be forgotten.”

Losing weight and keeping it off is one of the hardest things I know of to accomplish. And yet being over-weight is believed to be related to heart attacks, need for joint replacements and increased likelihood of harm from diseases such as the Coronavirus.
There are so many approaches to losing weight, many of which are so complicated that most of you will tire of the approach and regain the weight you initially lost, if not gain even more weight than when you started.
This approach by Adam Thrall is rather simple and just may work.

The Autobiography and Other Writings
By Benjamin Franklin
This is the particular copy of the Franklin autobiography that I have; but, I suspect any Franklin autobiography would be well worth reading whether or not it contained other writings.
There is an incredible amount of good advice in this autobiography that will benefit you and society if you will act upon it.
A fascinating and unconventionally educated man, Benjamin Franklin imparts—in his own words—wisdom and remarkable life lessons on the art of living with great personal integrity (Source: Amazon)
MOVIE OF THE WEEK
I just finished watching all 43 episodes of this revival of Rod Serling’s classic show. There are some good episodes in the collection, but I thought many were rather pedestrian. My favorite was “Memphis”, about a law clerk with six months left to live due to an inoperable brain tumor finds himself transported back in time to Memphis, Tennessee on the day of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination.
The show was cancelled after its first season and to be honest I was rather glad when I made it through the very last episode.
The Twilight Zone
Narrated by Forest Whitaker
The Twilight Zone is the second of three revivals of Rod Serling’s original 1959–64 television series. It aired for one season on the UPN network, with actor Forest Whitaker assuming Serling’s role as narrator and on-screen host. It premiered on September 18, 2002, and aired its final episode on May 21, 2003. (Source: Wikipedia)

Grounded in science and informed by real life, The Body Bookoffers a comprehensive overview of the human body and mind, from the cellular level up. From demystifying and debunking the hype around food groups to explaining the value of vitamins and minerals, readers will discover why it’s so important to embrace the instinct of hunger and to satisfy it with whole, nutrient-dense foods. Cameron also explains the essential role of movement, the importance of muscle and bone strength and why we need to sweat a little every day. (Source: GoodReads)

Unemployed men outside a soup kitchen opened in Chicago by Al Capone, 1931.
Al Capone started one of the first soup kitchens. In fact, preceding the passage of the Social Security Act, “soup kitchens” like the one Al Capone founded, provided the only meals that some unemployed Americans had.
Al Capone was a gangster who made a fortune during the prohibition though bootlegging. He had a bit of the Robin Hood mystique by being charitable from some of the money he made running his criminal enterprise. Being a bootlegger (made/distributed illegal alcohol) during Prohibition during the period in the USA from 1920-1933 when alcohol was illegal) was seen as an acceptable, glamorous, even brave thing to do by the public. But it’s well-known that he had brutal methods murdering enemies, extorting local businesses, bribing public officials, intimidating witnesses.
Al Capone’s intentions were an effort to clean up his image. “120 000 meals are served by Capone Free Soup Kitchen” the Chicago Tribune headlined on December 1931. Al Capone’s soup kitchen became one of the strangest sight Chicagoans had ever seen. An army of ragged, starving men assembled three times a day beside a storefront at 935 South State Street, feasting on the largesse of Al Capone. Toasting his health. Telling the newspapers that Capone was doing more for the poor than the entire U.S. government. He was even offering some of them jobs. Capone milked his good works for all the favorable publicity they were worth. He came down and walked among the men, the wretched of the earth, offering a handshake, a hearty smile, and words of encouragement from the great Al Capone. (Source: RareHistoricalPhotos.com)

Detroit has gone through some difficult times over the years and knows something about violence. I spent the entire 1967 riots a few blocks from Woodward and Grand Blvd at Pallister St.
Over the years it has been hard to believe one day Detroit would be the example of reason and responsibility, but I believe it is. The credit goes to Detroit Police Chief Craig and The Citizens of Detroit.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig is responding to comments from US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) made in the wake of the Daunte Wright death at the hands of a white police officer in Brooklyn Center Minnesota.
“When you look at reckless comments made by those who sit … in elected seats of influence, and you make reckless, disgusting comments that do nothing but inflame tensions,” Craig said. “That’s not being responsible. That’s not leadership.”
Craig minced no words addressing Tlaib’s original tweet calling for the end of policing and incarceration. Her remarks were in response to Officer Kim Potter’s shooting and killing of Wright, 20.
Tlaib’s original tweet on Monday said:
“It wasn’t an accident. Policing in our country is inherently & intentionally racist. Daunte Wright was met with aggression & violence. I am done with those who condone government-funded murder. No more policing, incarceration, and militarization. It can’t be reformed.”

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark; 10 June 1921 – 9 April 2021) was a member of the British royal family as the husband of Elizabeth II.
Philip married the then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947, following distinguished service in the Royal Navy during World War II. Together, they had four children — Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward — eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
When Elizabeth ascended the throne in February 1952, on the death of her father, George VI, Philip’s lifetime of service as royal consort began.
Over the decades, Philip often accompanied the Queen on royal engagements, and conducted thousands of his own solo appearances. He once referred to himself as “the world’s most experienced plaque unveiler,” while the Queen lauded him as her “constant strength and guide.”
Philip continued making public appearances well into his 90s, retiring only in August 2017. (Source: CNN)

Photo IDs
Georgia’s new voting law requires a drivers’ license or state ID number be listed to submit an absentee ballot to vote, among other new reforms. The state already required ID to vote in person. It had previously relied on signature matching to verify ballots.
Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO James Quincey issued a statement Wednesday night saying the company is “disappointed in the outcome of the Georgia voting legislation.”
And yet Coca-Cola required a valid photo ID for admission to their shareholder meeting.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
There are a number of versions of this book available. My copy came out in 1989, but I think the next time I read this book, I will acquire a more recent version.
The Jefferson Bible
The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth
By Thomas Jefferson
In the early nineteenth century Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence, conceived the idea of extracting a gospel purified of what he saw as extraneous philosophical, mythological, and theological elements.
To do so, he took verses from the four canonical gospels and arranged them into a single narrative, focusing on the actual words of Jesus. This work was never published during Jefferson’s lifetime, but was inherited by his grandson and printed for the first time in the early twentieth century.
The original bound manuscript, often referred to as “the Jefferson Bible,” is held by the United States National Museum in Washington.
